Values
Sustainability
The Broken Games Collective is born out of a desire to make games sustainable for long term access. This imperative does not just apply to game technologies but also the (infra)structures surrounding them. Many social, legal, environmental, and labour assemblages are broken and require critical reconstruction and transformation.
Playfulness
While concerned with preservation, we also recognise that games are dynamic objects that demand to be played, modified, and circulated. Thus, we embrace a playful attitude in all our projects. We cultivate an experimental practice without the expectation that every undertaking will work out, understanding that failures can be just as generative as successes.
Ethics
We strive to ‘do right’ by both members and participants by being attentive to the legal and ethical issues related to game research and creation. Being in constant dialogue with others is instrumental to that goal, and we strive to develop best practices to generate new knowledge without inflicting harm.
Inclusivity
We welcome people of diverse backgrounds and experiences, and make space for the many intersectionalities that our members and participants bring to the table. We work together with our community to prevent or reduce harm, and ensure that marginalised folks are not being pushed out of our events and spaces.
Open Communication
The Broken Games Collective relies on honest, compassionate, and considerate communication. This means giving each other the benefit of the doubt and acting in good faith, while also expressing our ideas with their impact in mind.
Accountability
We expect our members to act in good faith, respect each other’s boundaries, and take ownership of their actions. Mistakes are bound to happen, but they can help us grow and better ourselves if we take them as opportunities to learn.
